How to Submit

All work submitted will be reviewed by the editorial team that will then shortlist work to be published in the issues of TMS. Writers and contributors will be made aware of the decision of the core and editorial team within two months of the end of the submission period.

The Missing Slate (TMS) is a bi-annual magazine that opens for submissions in two parts every year. Below are the submission periods:

Summer Issue:
February 15th to April 15th

Winter Issue:
August 15th to October 15th

What we’re looking for: Summer 2024 issue “Homebound”

We want:
– Work that grabs our attention and stays with us.
– Work that speaks to us, not because it’s about people like us, but because it has a voice, an ache to be witnessed.
– An experience that takes and roots us in new worlds.
– Work that is vulnerable, with them pretty words, but that ultimately tells a good story, across any medium.

The Do’s and Do Not’s of Submissions

DO:
– Submit your work if you identify as a woman, gender non-conforming, or are part of a marginalized community (a sexual, social, or religious minority).
– Send your work as either solo or collaborative pieces and include any mediums that add to the experience (pictures, music, videos, etc. that you or your collaboration partner created).
– Send us links to the complete pieces if you can’t upload them to the form.
– Send us previously unpublished material and credit TMS if published elsewhere.
– Send us your 75-word bio.
– Limit your submissions to a maximum of three; in the case of poetry, include all three submissions in a single file.
– Include a cover letter where you introduce yourself, your work, and how it relates to this issue’s theme.

DO NOT:
– Submit if you are a cis-man (i.e. a man not part of a marginalized community). We love you, but TMS is not for you.
– Ask about your submission after the submission period has passed.

In essence, TMS supports the work of people from marginalized communities, including but not limited to: gender identity, sexual orientation, race, nationality, religion, ethnicity, socio-economic status, neurodiversity, disability etc. All work coming from a place of oppression is welcome to be heard in this shared and safe space, but the core and editorial team hold all rights to upholds filter discrimination of any form, ensuring a safe, fair, and inclusive environment for contributors and all individuals.

Even though TMS hopes to be a paying body in the near future, currently it is unable to pay its writers and contributors. All work submitted is to be done on a voluntary basis. Writers and contributors retain full ownership and rights to their work after appearance in The Missing Slate, ensuring their creative autonomy and control over their intellectual property.
