Openings
We’re always on the look out for fresh and interesting talent. Current openings are listed below. Please note: these are unpaid positions (apart from Advertising Executives) and our 20+ staff is all working voluntarily. Though we hope this will change in the future, it’s important for candidates not to have any illusions concerning monetary compensation.
The Missing Slate recently launched its Internship Program where thus far undergraduate and International Baccalaureate students from Italy, China, Austria, India, Bosnia, Puerto Rico, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, the United States and the Channel Islands have participated. The program serves as an internship opportunity with a registered magazine publication in exchange for academic credit.
Junior Assistant Editors – Internship Program
You will help the poetry or fiction editors with additional tasks like emailing receipts or confirmations / rejections of material selected. You will be responsible for helping editors decide on the material selected and ensuring deadlines are being met (editors can be forgetful sometimes!). You will also be the last to see the material before it’s sent onward to the Editor-in-Chief for final review. Creative Writing students are ideal candidates for these positions. Please ensure you get academic credit for this — we will provide you with any required letters of participation in our Internship Program.
Online Editor Interns – Internship Program
You will help Maryam Piracha, The Missing Slate’s Editor-in-Chief with regular web updates, content for the monthly newsletter, promoting the magazine through twitter, tumblr and Facebook and managing each of the three social networking pages. You will also help identify material from digital content issues for crossover web pieces. Creative Writing students are ideal candidates for these positions. Please ensure you get academic credit for this — we will provide you with any required letters of participation in our Internship Program. Undergraduate, IB and high school students are eligible candidates.
Deputy Creative Lead
With experience in Adobe InDesign (Illustrator is a plus), you will work in collaboration with Hassan Sagheer, our Creative Lead who designs the digital edition in lieu with our Creative Director, Moeed Tariq. You will play an instrumental role in the presentation of content. Good programming and aesthetic skills are key. Prior experience is an added boon.
Advertising Executive(s)
You will be creating advertising and marketing campaigns, working to get advertisers on board for our transition into print. For each advertisement you bring in, you will be paid a 30% commission. Professional growth depends entirely on the work put in. Fresh BBA/MBA graduates may apply (we’re looking to assemble a marketing & sales team). Obviously, the better we do in terms of gaining subscriptions and advertisements, the more you will earn. We don’t make promises we can’t keep. You will play an extremely pivotal role in our transition into print. Interviews will be conducted for successful candidates. What we’re really looking for, though, are people who can think outside the box, are spunky, creative, hardworking and initiative-driven individuals. Everything else is on-the-job experience!
If you’re interested in any of the above, email us with your CVs. In the case of editorial candidates, please include your editing / writing samples. For the position(s) of Deputy Creative Lead, samples of existing projects and/or a portfolio is key.
